Thermopsis villosa, or Carolina Lupine, is considered native only to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, but the plant is introduced to scattered areas throughout the Appalachians. It is a perennial that grows in dry, rocky partially shaded woods and along woodland edges. It blooms in mid summer with golden yellow flowers.
