Xyris torta, or Slender Yellow Eyed Grass, is native to much of the eastern half of the United States. It grows in moist to wet areas, like swamp margins, swales, fens, bog margins and lakeshores. It blooms in mid summer with yellow flowers that do not persist long in the sun.
This species is most easily distinguished from others in its group by the base which is bulbous, and by its leaves which are grass-like and are very twisted.
