Verbesina alternifolia, or Wingstem, is native to much of the eastern United States. It is a hardy perennial, which grows in open woods and woodland edges. It blooms in mid to late summer continue through early fall with yellow and green flowers.
This plant stands out from most lookalikes, because it has large yellow stamens, and it has winged stems - that is, its stems have sides that look like wings apart from the main stem. Additionally, this plant usually gets much taller than its lookalikes, such as Ratibida pinnata and Rudbeckia laciniata, which could be confused for it. See below for photo comparison.
