Symphyotrichum puniceum, or Purplestem Aster, is native to most of the eastern half of the United States, but is very rare in the south. It is a perennial that grows in swamps, bogs, moist woods and woodland edges, ditches and along roadsides. It blooms in late summer and fall with purple-blue flowers.
