Mertensia virginica, or Virginia Bluebells, is native to most of the Eastern US. It is an ephemeral perennial that grows in moist, often shaded woods, and on edges of woods. It blooms in early to mid spring with bright blue flowers, and then disappears completely underground after setting seed until the next season.
