Liatris scariosa, or Northern Blazing Star, is native to most of the eastern United States. It grows in dry, sandy prairies, meadows and fields and blooms in late summer with light purple flowers on tall stalks.
This genus is a difficult one to differentiate some of the species, but the bracts below the flowers are what can be used in most cases to correctly ID them. Liatris scariosa has large flower heads with bracts that extend out from the flowerhead but do not curve in toward it at all. The closest to it is Liatris aspera, but it has bracts that curve inward toward the flower. See the Liatris comparison photo below.
