Hydrangea arborescens, or Smooth Hydrangea, is native most of the eastern half of the United States, but it absent from the Great Lakes (Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin). It is a perennial shrub that grows in moist, open woods, along creeks and rivers and in floodplain forests. It blooms in mid to late spring with bright white flowers that persist through most of summer.
