Dodecatheon meadia, or Shooting Star, is native to most of the eastern half of the United States. It is a perennial that grows in moist to open woods and woodland edges, as well as in adjoining prairies, meadows and glades. It blooms in early spring with either pink or white flowers. This plant is an ephemeral, which means after setting seed, it disappears underground until the following season.
