Cypripedium reginae, or Showy Lady's Slipper, is native to the northeastern quarter of the United States. IIt is a perennial that grows in moist open woods, on woodland edges, as well as in swamps, marshes, fens and bogs, and sometimes along roadsides and railroads, in appropriate conditions. It blooms in late spring and early to mid summer with white and pink flowers.

This species cannot easily be confused with other members of the genus. This species is tall and has large leaves, and the entire plant is covered in short hairs that almost give the plant a gray appeareance. No other species of Cypripedium exhibit these features. Additionally, the flower is larger and differently colored than all other species as well. The overall look of the plant when not in flower does resemble species of Veratrum, but those also do not have hair on the leaves and stems.
