Chrysosplenium americanum, or Golden Saxifrage, is native to the Great Lakes area as well as the Northeast, down into the Appalachian Mountains. It is a perennial, that grows in cool, wet areas like seeps, swamps, stream edges and wet woods. It blooms in early spring, with small green and brown flowers.
The plant is rather distinct, with small green flowers with brown stamens. It is rather easily identified, but not easily recognized. Even when in flower, it is very easy to pass by unless you are looking very closely at the ground in wet areas.
