Cephalanthus occidentalis, or Buttonbush, is native to most of the United States, except parts of the Western US. It is a perennial shrub, which grows in moist areas, like ditches, swamps, moist woodlands and woodland edges. It blooms in late spring or early summer with balls of white flowers.

The flower on this is not like very many other shrubs and can be easily distinguished. Additionally, the large ball-shaped seed pod is on the plant much of the season and also aids in identification when not in bloom.
