Helianthemum canadense, or Frostweed, is native to the Great Lakes Area, as well as the eastern Coastal states; it is in some of the inland states as well, but is considered quite rare. It is a perennial that grows in dry, sandy, and rocky areas, like open woods, edges of woods, along trails and roads, and in open prairies. It blooms in mid to late spring with bright yellow flowers that seem to be open only when the sun shines.
